Two weeks after hip replacement surgery, Kathy Setian rode the J to City Hall in a ride-along organized by San Francisco Transit Riders in early September and experienced the line’s new difficulties. How does the shortened route affect J-Church riders? Some J-Church riders, though, are wary that such a decision could be a prelude to a permanent route change that keeps the line out of the subway. It’s unclear for how long the shortened route would remain in effect if the agency’s board approves the first option. A third alternative would restore subway service on the J line only during the evenings.

A second option supported by many J-Church riders would run the full J route from Balboa Park to Embarcadero station with 15-minute frequencies. The first option, which the agency says is “supported by technical analysis,” would keep the J-Church’s current truncated route, ending at Church and Duboce streets instead of descending into the Market Street subway. Now, as the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency prepares to make limited service restorations in February 2022, the fate of the century-old J line has brewed yet another intense debate for the thousands of riders still using the line. But almost a year later, the historic single-car train is still running a truncated route that keeps it out of the Market Street subway and from reaching downtown - even as most other Muni Metro lines were fully restored this spring.
